Case Study - Brewster, Washington

In 2001, C. Mark Hansen uncovered a $10.00 per patient day
reimbursement error done by the Washington Department of Social and
Health Services when analyzing and forecasting the Medicaid rate
for a skilled nursing facility in Brewster, Washington. Further
investigation revealed that state had made this same reimbursement
error on approximately 68 facilities for over a year at a total
estimated cost to nursing home operators of $6,800,000.
This discovery resulted in new reimbursement regulations being
adopted by the State of Washington in 2001. The facility
received a retroactive payment for the error going back for over a
year.
